Imaging the Saint John's Bible

Digitizing the Saint John's Bible was the first working contact I had with Saint John's University. The original work was done at ColorMax, my former employer. After being hired at HMML, the camera, lighting and fixtures were purchased from ColorMax to continue imaging the Bible on the SJU campus.

Photographing the Saint John's Bible is unlike any work I've done in the past. Simple copy photography won't do; the pages of the Bible contain metallic inks, foils, raised gold lettering and, in some cases, shallow bas-relief sculpted elements. Each page is unique and demands its own special treatment.

HMML has recently completed work on a small imaging studio on campus that will allow us to finish the digitization work here.

Somewhere among all the cables, lights, and reflectors, a page of the Saint John's Bible is being digitized! Each page is unique, so the setup changes depending on the materials and techniques used for each page.
