Heckman Stipends

The Hill Museum & Manuscript Library (HMML) invites applications for research stipends, made possible by the A.A. Heckman Fund. Up to 10 stipends in amounts up to $2,000 are awarded yearly. The stipends may be used to defray the cost of travel, room and board, microfilm reproduction, photo-duplication and other expenses associated with research at HMML. Length of residency may range from two weeks to six months. Undergraduate, graduate, or postdoctoral scholars (those who are within three years of completing a terminal master’s or doctoral degree) are eligible. The program is specifically intended to help scholars who have not yet established themselves professionally and whose research cannot progress satisfactorily without consulting materials to be found in the collections of the Hill Museum & Manuscript Library.

Application Information

Applicants should submit to the HMML Committee on Research:

  • A letter of application
  • A curriculum vitae
  • A one-page description of the proposed research project, including length of stay and an explanation of how HMML’s resources will enable them to advance their project
  • A confidential letter of recommendation from their advisor, thesis director, mentor, or, in the case of postdoctoral candidates, a colleague who is a good judge of their work
