In 2003, the Hill Museum & Manuscript Library began preserving manuscripts using digital photography. Researchers can order copies of these manuscripts on disk or take advantage of HMML’s new free online manuscript viewing service. These manuscripts are hosted on
Vivarium, HMML’s online image viewing system and are subject to the following restrictions:
- A given researcher can have up to three manuscripts online for viewing at any given time. The researcher can ask HMML to remove any or all of the three items in order to put more manuscripts online.
- Online items are held on the Vivarium web server for a period of one month, after which they are removed to prevent the disk space on the server from filling up.
- Vivarium is an online viewing tool; it doesn’t allow for page images or complete manuscripts to be downloaded by the user. Researchers needing a downloaded copy should order it in the usual manner with the standard fees applied.
- Researchers requesting free online manuscripts will be given the
URL of a special login page and a custom password to enter; this
will search for and retrieve the manuscripts in Vivarium.
