Finding a particular manuscript by shelfmark can be a challenge. HMML's catalogue contains over 90,000 manuscripts, and
there is no standardized form or syntax for recording shelfmarks. In addition, shelfmarks can, over time, be changed
by the holding institution.
Use the form below to locate a particular shelfmark or to list
the shelfmarks available based on city or library selections. First,
select a city from the first drop-down list. Then, you can check to
see if multiple library entries exist for that city by choosing from
the second drop-down list (ignoring the "Library" list will search
all libraries for that city). Enter nothing
in the "Shelfmark" box to get all the manuscripts from the city or library chosen, or enter a search string to limit the
search results.
The search string can be a text fragment or word, or a numeric
fragment. The database will return results containing the fragment
searched upon, i.e., searching for "50" will bring up "50," "150,"
and "500." Hint: if you have only a number for a shelfmark and don't know what
text might accompany it, just enter the number; the chances of
getting "hits" increases.
Search for EMML Manuscripts
The microfilmed manuscripts of the Ethiopian
Manuscript Microfilm Library (EMML) project are usually identified by
their "EMML number;" the project number issued to each manuscript as it
was filmed. City and library names are less useful as finding aids for
these manuscripts, and many do not have formal shelfmarks. Enter the
EMML number in the box below. Don't type the "EMML" part of the code;
only the number is needed.
Enter keyword or words in form below. Do not add
any Boolean operators between words. This form searches all the
descriptive fields in the three main tables of the manuscript database
(manuscripts, parts, and texts). Use one
search term or string at a time. NOTE: This is a comprehensive search, so general terms may result in many, many matching records.
