Paper, modern restoration and binding. 38 pages, now out of order, paper professionally conserved.
Royal, cathedral, and monastic chanceries produced numerous letters
every day. For the convenience of the scribes and notaries, they
would compile formularies that contained sample letters for every
conceivable situation. They frequently copied out actual letters
from their files to use as models. Formularies are important because
they show the internal workings of medieval government and because
many medieval letters have survived only in this form.
This is a portion of a longer formulary, apparently drawn up for the
use of the canons of the Cathedral of Barcelona. It contains
correspondance between the bishop and canons of Barcelona and
John XXII, the Avignon Pope (1316-1334) regarding diocesan matters.
