This presentation will examine the evidence and attempt to explain the relationship between the bishop of Rome and the Roman emperor in Constantinople between the 5th and 7th centuries. The presentation will touch on the issues of temporal and spiritual authority, the evolution of Christian theology, the growth of religious conformity, and the influence of barbarian invasions. The presentation itself may take any form, but must incorporate in some way the following readings:

Ask the class to speculate how the economy and the ecology of the Mediterranean region influenced the Roman empire during this period.
Debate the causes for the different development of the eastern and western Christian church -- were they geographical, doctrinal, social, or caused by outside forces?
