The Malta Study Center signed an agreement with the National Archives of
Malta in October, 2007, to digitize the archives of the Magna Curia
Castellania, the largest secular tribunal in Malta during the time of the
Knights. Since then, the studio has digitized 210 volumes of the Magna Curia
Castellania Acta Originale, dating between 1545 and 1689. The Acta Originale
are the most frequently-consulted section of the archives of the Magna Curia
Castellania. There are 1411 volumes in all, covering the period between 1543
and 1798. As of February 2010, 376 volumes consisting of 362,123 digital
images have been photographed. There is also a full index in 25 volumes that Dr. G. Portelli
Carbone prepared in the late 19th century. This index has not
been printed, and it will be digitized as part of the project.
The Magna Curia Castellania was under
the jurisdiction of the Master of the Order. Its chief officer, the
Castellano, was a Knight of the Order, and the court personnel consisted of
a civil judge, a criminal judge, an exchequer, a vice-exchequer, two
notaries, and several clerks. It was the largest existing tribunal on the
island, and contains considerable information about daily life on Malta. The
tribunal heard both civil suits and criminal trials concerning domestic
violence, assault, theft, fights, or appointment of guardians for children.
A separate Appellate Court heard appeals to its judgments. The Knights were
exempt from its jurisdiction because they could be prosecuted within the
Order.
