The Treasury, 1604-1798 (606 mss)

The Treasury section of the archives contains records from the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century of the Hospitaller's finances in Malta and throughout Europe. This includes records of the defenses and public works of Malta.

The Treasury administered money for the entire Order. When the Order was divided into eight separate langues, or tongues, in 1357, the priors of each langue levied taxes. Receivers collected the taxes and remitted what was due to the Treasury. The Treasury also collected revenue from the Order's property in Malta and abroad, from the fees paid to the quarantine (the Lazzaretto), and from the issuance of patents of nobility. In addition there were committees attached to the Treasury, namely the Congregation of War (which was responsible for the defense and water supply of the island), the Magisterial receipts, the Secretariat, and the Reports of the Commissioners.
