Section XIII (Archive 1934-2034b)
The Conventual Church, 1530-1798 (194 mss)

This section of the archives contains the records of the churches and monasteries of the Order of St. John throughout Europe, as well as the Conventual Church of St. John of Valletta (today the Co-Cathedral of St. John, Valletta).

About half of the materials are of an ecclesiastical and liturgical nature. This includes the acts of the priors (Arch. 1935-1995) and the Bull of the Crusade (Arch. 1996-2037). The prior was a member of the Order of St. John, and had authority independent of the bishop of Malta. As spiritual head of the Order the prior could visit all the churches, confer minor orders, and censure members of the order, but he could not ordain priests. The printing press also came under the prior's authority. The remainder of the archive contains information about the foundation of the Jesuit college, its later conversion to the University, the Order's relations with the King of the Two Sicilies and the dispute between the Grand Masters and the Bishops of Malta.
