Archives of the Parishes of Malta and Gozo
855 mss.

This section contains the archives of the parish churches of Malta and Gozo. The earliest records date from 1539; the most recent from 1986. The parish archives record the baptisms, confirmations, marriages, and deaths of the inhabitants. Some of the recorders also noted unusual events in the life of the parish. Two of the parishes, Lija and Cospicua, preserved music manuscripts.

Original manuscripts are housed in the parishes; microfilm copies are held by the Malta Study Center, Hill Museum & Manuscript Library. Permission to reproduce microfilms must be obtained from the parish that owns them.

Michelangiolo Grima (c. 1731-1798), Della medicina traumatica altrimenti detta vulneraria (Florence, Gaetano Cambiagi, 1773). xii + 240 pp; 18 plates with two additional engravings -- frontispiece and facing p. 78 -- by F. Gregori. Plate XVII facing page 213 should read XVI. 27 cm by 19 cm. General Condition: Good. No foxing, but woodworm. Text, however, is unaffected.

The author, Michelangiolo Grima, was a celebrated Maltese surgeon and Professor of Anatomy. He was born in Malta ca. 1731 and studied and worked in the Hospital of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem in Malta. Later he worked and continued his studies in Florence. He graduated Doctor of Philosophy and Medicine at Pisa. He worked at the Cassel Hospital in Germany, in Paris, and was appointed an army surgeon. Recalled to Malta by the Grand Master of the Order of St. John to reform the Medical School. Published a number of other medical textbooks and treatises. Died 1798.

The engraver, F. Gregori, may well be the Florentine engraver, Ferdinando Gregori (1743-ca. 1804) shown in Benezit.

Archives of the Collegiate Church of St. Paul, Rabat, Malta

St. Paul's Grotto, Rabat, is a complex of caves, a church, and a museum that mark the traditional spot where the Apostle was held after he was shipwrecked on the island of Malta. St. Paul's Church was originally a parish church under the jurisdiction of the cathedral of Mdina, but in 1902 Rabat and Mdina became two separate parishes; the parish of St. Paul's attained the status of a Collegiate Church in 1962. The archives are located in the Wignacourt Collegiate Museum.
