Description of Collection:
Eleven volumes. 12 volumes, including a typewritten repertory, containing
approximately x number of pages, were microfilmed in Malta for the Hill
Monastic Manuscript Library Malta Microfilm project. The volumes comprise
eleven reels of microfilm. HMML Project numbers are 6568, 6569, 6570, 6571,
6572, 6573, 6574, 6575, 6576, 6577, 6578. The foliation is continuous.
Because the additional pages were not originally foliated, they have been
designated with letters of the alphabet. All references to recto and verso
should use the letters r and v. The volumes are written in Italian.
Volumes consists of two series, the Beni Enfiteutici (Mdina,
ACM, Bene Catt. Sliema, 1-5) and the Ricognizioni e Proroghe (Mdina,
ACM, Bene Catt. Sliema, 5-10). The Beni Enfiteutici was compiled in the
Cathedral's Officio delle Ipoteche (Mortgage Office) by the notary Giuseppe
Metropoli, with E. Carsoni, Chancellor, Canon Carmelo Scicluna, Deputy, and
the architect Giuseppe Bonavia. It may have been referred to as the Lease
Book (Enfileuta al Libro). (see volume 1, pp. 13v-14). The last volume, no.
4, was compiled by the notary Vincenzo Paolo Frenza. The Ricogizioni e
Proroghe was compiled by a number of notaries (see the repertory, PN 6568).
It consists of notations of amendments to leases, which had been processed
through the legal system and attested to by public notaries. Sliema was
developed in the 19th century. According to Zammit, Malta, p.
362-3, regular ferry service between Valletta and Sliema and the connection
of Sliema to an aqueduct (replacing earlier attempts to distill sea water)
in 1881 caused the rapid growth of the area. In 1878, the church of Stella
Maris was made a parish church and the Jesuits instituted a college in St.
Julian's. These volumes contain the real estate of the Cathedral in the
developing suburb of Sliema and identify leaseholders. The volumes contain
written descriptions of the cathedral's properties in Sliema, organized by
division and lots, the leaseholders of the properties (including 99 year
leases) the construction of the buildings, the people involved in the
inquests, the rents for the properties and, in the Beni Enfiteutici,
maps showing individual lots and streets.
