The Hill Museum & Manuscript Library has been active
in the preservation of Ethiopian manuscripts for over 35 years,
beginning with its involvement with the The Ethiopian Manuscript Microfilm Library (EMML).
The EMML project continued until the early 1990's, producing microfilm copies of over 7000 manuscripts. Cataloguing of these manuscripts has been taking place for 30 years; the ten catalogue volumes produced so far comprise one of the most important scholarly references available on this topic. Today, the Hill Museum & Manuscript Libraries continues its preservation of Ethiopian manuscript culture by sponsoring preservation projects that use digital technologies to photograph manuscripts and make them available for scholarly research.
