Opportunities for Scholars

The Austria/Germany Study Center is responsible for approximately 50,000 manuscripts on microfilm from libraries in Austria, Germany and Switzerland.  Collaboration with Austrian libraries began in April 1965, when Father Oliver Kapsner, OSB, started work at the Abbey of Kremsmünster.  Over the course of seven years, Father Oliver and his successor led the effort to photograph over 30,000 manuscripts from monastic, university, municipal and state libraries.  The largest single library filmed was the Austrian National Library in Vienna.

Today, the Austria/Germany Study Center supports the use of this collection by providing descriptions of color images and microfilms, helping scholars with reference questions, and facilitating the making of copies from the microfilms for scholars.  The Center has also been active in promoting the development and use of other digital resources on Medieval Austrian, German and Swiss culture, language, and history.
