HMML’s projects in Portugal focused on the medieval and early modern manuscript collections of Coimbra and Lisbon. Over 2,050 manuscript volumes were microfilmed, including individual charters and archival records from the Arquivo Municipal de Lisboa. Portugal’s collections contain a wide breadth of subject matter, most importantly the 451 volumes from the Cistercian monastery of Santa Maria de Alcobaça now held in the Biblioteca Nacional. Manuscripts also include archival material from Portugal’s early expansion into India, Africa, and Latin America.
