Digitized Printed Catalogues

HMML has begun the digitization of catalogues relating to its holdings . Materials will be put on-line as they become available.

Search Databases
The Hill Museum & Manuscript Library contains a number of different collections. As a "library of libraries," most of its holdings consist of microfilms or digital images of manuscripts held by other institutions. HMML also has its own collections of manuscripts, printed books, and art, not all of which are catalogued. Therefore, several different search systems are used to find things in the HMML collections.

Finding Manuscripts
HMML has been photographing manuscripts and cataloguing their contents since 1965. This core mission has resulted in a collection of over 100,000 manuscripts, mostly on microfilm. If you're looking for information about HMML's manuscript holdings, the main manuscript catalogue is the place to start.

Help on using OLIVER, the main online manuscript database can be found here. In addition to the main catalogue, a number of useful handlists can also be downloaded from this site; these finding aids break the manuscript collection into useful categories for quick searches.

Browsing and Searching for Images Online
In 2004, Vivarium was launched. This online digital object database allows users to browse and search for images and their accompanying metadata.

Note: The holding in Vivarium consist mostly of art and manuscript images from HMML's own holdings. Users looking specifically for manuscripts should start by looking in the main online manuscript catalogue.

Lowe Manuscripts. E. A. Lowe, Codices latini antiquiores, (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1934-1966) is a multi-volume palaeographic guide to Latin manuscripts dated prior to the ninth century. The Hill Museum & Manuscript Library systematically acquired reproductions of the manuscripts cited by Lowe.

Manuscripts listed by Gamber. Klaus Gamber, Codices liturgici latini antiquiores, 2 volumes (Freiburg: Spicilegii Friburgensis Subsidia, 1968) is an authoritative bibliography of liturgical manuscripts. HMML systematically collected reproductions of the manuscripts listed by Gamber.
