As a privately endowed, non-profit cultural center and
research library, the Hill
Museum & Manuscript Library (HMML) depends on the support of friends who share this mission.
HMML accepts gifts-in-kind, including microfilm, off-prints, catalogues,
rare books, artwork, and reproductions. Donated collections will have a home at HMML,
where they will be preserved and made available to a worldwide community.
Friends pledge an annual gift in support of the current operating budget. Your gift may be unrestricted, in which case it will be applied to those areas of the budget in greatest need, or it may be designated to one of the following activities:
Photographing and Digitization
Photographing manuscripts is the heart of HMML's mission. Since 1965, HMML has photographed more than 90,000 volumes in libraries and archives throughout Europe, the Middle East and East Africa. Starting in 2003, HMML is using high-quality digital photography for both archival and scholarly purposes.
Computerization
HMML is using computer technology to create access to its vast collection of manuscripts. The HMML computerization initiative consists of four interrelated components: converting HMML's inventory of microfilms to an electronic format (underway); creating an electronic database of our incipit index (completed); preserving and disseminating additional collections using digital imaging technology (underway); and making HMML's collections accessible over the Internet through
Vivarium.
Cataloguing
Through the years, scores of print catalogues of our microfilm collections have been produced by scholars on the HMML staff. Almost all of this material is now accessible through the HMML
electronic catalogue. Cataloguing continues on our vast collection of Ethiopian manuscripts and our unique Malta collection.
Educational Programs
HMML sponsors a variety of educational programs for scholars, teachers, students and the general public. In addition to assisting medieval scholars with research, the library hosts programs for undergraduate students and young scholars. HMML enriches the intellectual and cultural development of the local and regional community through open houses, field trips for elementary, secondary and university students, a film and lecture series for the general public and an Elderhostel summer enrichment program for senior citizens.
