HMML’s work in Montenegro began with the monastery of Cetinje, a focal point for Serbian identity in this republic of the former Yugoslavia. With the support of Metropolitan Amfilohije of Montenegro and the Littoral, HMML partners from Pakrac in Croatia are digitizing this extraordinary collection of Church Slavonic manuscripts dating from the 13th and later centuries, many of which are of exceptional artistic and literary importance. In 2023, HMML began work with the Archive of the Kotor Diocese (Biskupski Arhiv Kotor), one of the oldest “in continuo” archives in the region. Established in the 12th century, the oldest document in the archive is from 1431 CE, as the documents from years prior were destroyed in fire. The manuscripts in this archive—which include correspondence and anagraphic records—are an invaluable source for the research of local history, art, culture, and society.
